Welcome to Year 1!

Welcome back and a very warm welcome to Year 1!

We hope you have all had a fantastic summer and are feeling refreshed for the year ahead. We are thrilled to begin a new term packed with exciting learning, creative opportunities and new experiences. We look forward to seeing the children embrace challenges, build their independence and continue to develop their curiosity and confidence.

Things to Remember

Daily Essentials

A labelled water bottle, these will be washed each day and returned home each half term.

Should you wish your child to bring a snack for break time, we ask that it is a healthy option such as fruit or vegetables. Please remember that fresh fruit is available daily as part of our school provision.

Please ensure your child has a book bag each day for their belongings.

PE

PE lessons will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays.

PE kits will be kept on classroom pegs and returned home at half term.

Reading

Reading books should be brought into school every day.

Reading books will be changed on Wednesdays.

We encourage you to read with your child a minimum of three times each week, as regular reading is one of the best ways to support progress. Please sign your child’s reading record each time you read with them. Your child’s book will not be changed if an adult has not signed the reading record.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on Fridays and should be returned by Wednesday.

Library Books

A new library book will be issued each week 1R- Monday 1TR- Tuesday and should be returned on following Monday or Tuesday.

What We Will Be Learning This Term

English

This half term in English, Year 1 will be exploring the story Old Bear by Jane Hissey. The children will develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through a range of exciting activities linked to the story. They will learn to retell events, describe characters and settings, write simple sentences, and build their vocabulary while developing a love of storytelling and books.

Mathematics

This term we will be focusing on securing and developing our number skills to 100. We will also be learning about:

  1. Numbers to 10
  2. Part- whole within 10
  3. Addition within 10


Topic

This term, Year 1 will be exploring the exciting topic of Space. Children will learn about the planets, the Moon and the Sun, and discover how space exploration has changed over time. They will learn about significant figures such as Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space, and Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the Moon.

As part of their learning, children will use satellite images to explore our local area from space and compare it with different places around the world. Through these geographical links, they will develop their understanding of similarities and differences between locations while inspiring curiosity about our planet and the wider universe.

Science

This term we will be identifying and comparing materials. In this unit, the children will learn to identify, name and compare a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, metal, glass, fabric and paper. They will explore the different properties of materials and investigate why certain materials are used for different objects. Through practical activities, children will develop their observation, sorting and scientific enquiry skills while learning to describe and compare materials using simple scientific vocabulary.

Art

This term, children will explore the poetry book I Like Myself, creating self-portraits and writing poems that celebrate their unique qualities. We will also produce Space-themed abstract artwork inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, exploring colour, pattern and texture. This learning links with our Computing unit on Digital Painting, where children will use digital tools to create and experiment with their own artwork.

Computing

This term, Year 1 will be learning about Technology Around Us. Children will identify different types of technology and explore how technology is used at home, in school and in the wider world. They will learn to recognise devices such as tablets, laptops and desktop computers and understand their different uses. We will also be exploring digital painting, using shape, freehand, line and choosing appropriate tools to draw a picture using a computer.

PSHE (Jigsaw)

We will be learning about Being Me in My World and Celebrating Differences.

PE

We will take part in invasion games and gymnastics focusing on balance, coordination, confidence and team work.

RE

We will explore the question Who are Christians and what do they believe?

Music

This term in Music, the children will explore a variety of musicians, musical styles and rhythms through two exciting units of work. In ‘Hey You!’, they will learn about Old School Hip Hop, while ‘Rhythm in the Way We Walk’ introduces children to the sounds and rhythms of Reggae and Hip Hop. Through singing, listening, performing and composing, pupils will develop their musical skills and appreciation of different genres.

Summer Term

We hope you’ve all had a brilliant holiday and are ready for the Summer term. We have lots of exciting activities planned over the next few weeks, here is what we’ll be up to.

English

This half term, Year 2 will be studying Wolves by Emily Gravett. Through this engaging picture book, the children will explore how information texts are structured and how facts can be presented to the reader. They will learn about features of non-chronological reports, such as headings, subheadings, factual sentences and illustrations. Using this knowledge, the children will plan and write their own non-chronological report, developing their research, writing and editing skills along the way.

Maths

This half term, Year 2 will be focusing on fractions and time. In fractions, children will learn to recognise, find and write simple fractions such as ½, ⅓, ¼ and ¾, and understand that fractions are equal parts of a whole or group. They will also begin to explore how fractions can be used in everyday situations.

In our time unit, children will develop their ability to tell the time to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. They will also learn to sequence events, use appropriate vocabulary (such as minutes, hours and o’clock), and solve simple problems involving time.

Science

Year 2 will be exploring habitats and how living things depend on them to survive. The children will learn about a variety of habitats, including woodlands, ponds and microhabitats, and discover how animals and plants are suited to their environments. As part of this unit, we will make use of our local Forest School area, including our pond, to observe habitats first-hand.

Topic

This half term, Year 2 will continue to learn about three significant British queens: Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. The children will explore who these rulers were, when they lived, and why they are important in British history.

Alongside their history learning, pupils will create artwork inspired by each queen, exploring different styles of portraiture. They will look at royal portraits from the past and present, using these as inspiration to create their own pieces.

The children will also begin the Seaside unit this half term. Year 2 will explore what makes seaside locations special, including physical features such as beaches, cliffs and the sea, as well as human features like piers, promenades and amusements. At the end of the half term, we are very excited to be visiting Lytham St Annes, where the children will have the opportunity to explore a real seaside environment, observe geographical features first-hand and apply their learning in a meaningful way.

Jigsaw

Our Puzzle piece this half term is Relationships. The children will learn about the importance of having positive and healthy relationships with others, including friends and family. They will develop skills such as kindness, respect and cooperation, and understand how to be a good friend.

Pupils will also learn about different types of relationships, how to recognise when they feel safe and happy, and who they can talk to if they have worries or concerns. The unit will cover understanding personal space, managing feelings in relationships, and resolving simple conflicts.

PE

PE will be on Thursdays. Please remember to bring your PE kit. This should include a plain white t-shirt or Corrie t-shirt, plain black shorts or leggings and black pumps.

Homework

You will be given Maths homework each week as well as being able to choose from a range of creative activities in Topic. Homework is given out on Friday and is due in the following Wednesday.

We ask that reading books are read 3 times weekly at home and an adult will need to sign the Reading Log in order for it to be changed.

Year 2

We hope you’ve all had a fantastic summer and are ready for the new term. We’ve got an exciting few months ahead, and we can’t wait to dive in! The Autumn Term is always a busy one, so here’s a little peek at what’s coming up:

English

To begin the school year, we are starting with the text ‘The Naughty Bus’ by Jan and Jerry Oke, this is a really fun book to kick start our brilliant work in English and will provide lots of great writing opportunities. We will be creating our own exciting adventure stories to share with our families.

We will be continuing to enhance our phonic knowledge and will be looking at lots of strategies to help us with our spelling of the Year 1 and 2 words.

Maths

We are starting the year with the ‘Numbers to 100’ unit in Power Maths looking at counting in 10’s to 100, partitioning numbers, comparing numbers and adding numbers on a number line.

We will then be moving onto addition and subtraction, looking at the column method.

Science

This half term our science unit is ‘Uses of everyday materials’. We will be learning about different materials and how we use them in our everyday lives. We be exploring the range of materials used in our school and will carry out a range of experiments to test the most suitable material for a particular task.

Topic

Our topic this half term is ‘Magical Mapping’, we will be developing key map skills through a range of engaging geographical skill-based activities. We will explore a range of maps at a local, national and global level, developing the understanding of how to navigate around an atlas to find key countries, continents, oceans and seas along with devising their own maps and routes. We will learn how to ‘view from above’ looking at aerial photographs to spot human and physical features, understand simple map symbols, compass directions and develop key geographical vocabulary throughout the unit.

Jigsaw

Our first Puzzle is called Being Me In My World. We will be discussing how we learn, how we can help others and our school community.



PE

PE will be on Wednesdays.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR PE KIT. This should include a plain white t-shirt or Corrie t-shirt, plain black shorts or leggings and black pumps.

FOREST SCHOOL

Forest school will be on Tuesdays.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR FOREST SCHOOL CLOTHES. This needs to be suitable clothing and footwear for wet, muddy activities.



HOMEWORK

We will continue to have a creative approach to our homework this term. You will be given Maths and Spelling homework each week as well as being able to choose from a range of creative activities in Topic.

Homework is given out on Friday and is due in the following Wednesday.

We read in class every day, so make sure you always have your Reading Log in school.

Please make sure you also read twice each week at home and ask an adult to sign your Reading Log for you.

We will check your Reading Log every WEDNESDAY to see that you have read at home, so please don’t forget!!
