Welcome to Year 3!

We are looking forward to a busy and exciting year ahead. We look forward to seeing the children embrace new challenges, develop their independence and grow in confidence, curiosity and resilience.

English

Our writing this half term will be inspired by The Iron Man by Ted Hughes which follows a giant metal man who arrives mysteriously, wreaks havoc by eating farm machinery, and eventually saves the Earth from an alien dragon. We will use this story to create our own narrative and also an explanation text. The children will focus on daily sentence accuracy and apply a range of grammatical skills in their writing.

Reading

We will have daily whole class reading sessions in Year 3 and our first class text is Bill’s New Frock by Ann Fine. It tells the story of Bill Simpson, who wakes up one morning to find he has transformed into a girl. Now forced to go to school in a pink dress, Bill discovers one of the worst days in his life is about to unfold.

Maths

We are starting the year with the ‘Place Value’ unit in Power Maths, then moving onto addition and subtraction, partitioning numbers, comparing numbers and adding numbers on a number line.

We will be continuing to work on our times table knowledge and times table rockstars will really help to support this.

Science

This half term our science unit is ‘Animals including Humans’. We will be learning about the links between animals and humans. We be exploring vertebrates and invertebrates, looking at the function of muscles in the human body and learning about a balanced diet.

Topic

Our topic this half term is ‘The Stone Age to Iron Age’, we will be learning all about this period of time and life in the Stone Age. We will develop our historical skills by exploring artefacts such as cave paintings to infer what like was like in this time period. There will also be an exciting Stone Age Workshop, with lots of artefacts and information for us to enjoy.

Jigsaw

Our first Puzzle is called Being Me In My World. We will be discussing how we learn, how we can help others and our school community.

PE

PE will be Wednesday and every other Tuesday.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR PE KIT. This should include a plain white t-shirt or Corrie t-shirt, plain black shorts or leggings and black pumps.

FOREST SCHOOL

We are very excited to be continuing our Forest School sessions this year. Forest School will take place every other Thursday.

The sessions will begin as follows:

  • Thursday 10th September – 3M
  • Thursday 17th September – 3B

The classes will then continue to alternate each Thursday.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR FOREST SCHOOL CLOTHES. This needs to be suitable clothing and footwear for wet, muddy activities.

HOMEWORK

We will continue to have a creative approach to our homework this term. You will be given Maths and Spelling homework each week as well as being able to choose from a range of creative activities in Topic.

Homework is given out on Friday and is due in the following Wednesday.

We read in class every day, so make sure you always have your Reading Log in school.

Please make sure you also read twice each week at home and ask an adult to sign your Reading Log for you.

We will check your Reading Log every WEDNESDAY to see that you have read at home, so please don’t forget!!

Welcome to Year 1!

Welcome back and a very warm welcome to Year 1!

We hope you have all had a fantastic summer and are feeling refreshed for the year ahead. We are thrilled to begin a new term packed with exciting learning, creative opportunities and new experiences. We look forward to seeing the children embrace challenges, build their independence and continue to develop their curiosity and confidence.

Things to Remember

Daily Essentials

A labelled water bottle, these will be washed each day and returned home each half term.

Should you wish your child to bring a snack for break time, we ask that it is a healthy option such as fruit or vegetables. Please remember that fresh fruit is available daily as part of our school provision.

Please ensure your child has a book bag each day for their belongings.

PE

PE lessons will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays.

PE kits will be kept on classroom pegs and returned home at half term.

Reading

Reading books should be brought into school every day.

Reading books will be changed on Wednesdays.

We encourage you to read with your child a minimum of three times each week, as regular reading is one of the best ways to support progress. Please sign your child’s reading record each time you read with them. Your child’s book will not be changed if an adult has not signed the reading record.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on Fridays and should be returned by Wednesday.

Library Books

A new library book will be issued each week 1R- Monday 1TR- Tuesday and should be returned on following Monday or Tuesday.

What We Will Be Learning This Term

English

This half term in English, Year 1 will be exploring the story Old Bear by Jane Hissey. The children will develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through a range of exciting activities linked to the story. They will learn to retell events, describe characters and settings, write simple sentences, and build their vocabulary while developing a love of storytelling and books.

Mathematics

This term we will be focusing on securing and developing our number skills to 100. We will also be learning about:

  1. Numbers to 10
  2. Part- whole within 10
  3. Addition within 10


Topic

This term, Year 1 will be exploring the exciting topic of Space. Children will learn about the planets, the Moon and the Sun, and discover how space exploration has changed over time. They will learn about significant figures such as Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space, and Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the Moon.

As part of their learning, children will use satellite images to explore our local area from space and compare it with different places around the world. Through these geographical links, they will develop their understanding of similarities and differences between locations while inspiring curiosity about our planet and the wider universe.

Science

This term we will be identifying and comparing materials. In this unit, the children will learn to identify, name and compare a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, metal, glass, fabric and paper. They will explore the different properties of materials and investigate why certain materials are used for different objects. Through practical activities, children will develop their observation, sorting and scientific enquiry skills while learning to describe and compare materials using simple scientific vocabulary.

Art

This term, children will explore the poetry book I Like Myself, creating self-portraits and writing poems that celebrate their unique qualities. We will also produce Space-themed abstract artwork inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, exploring colour, pattern and texture. This learning links with our Computing unit on Digital Painting, where children will use digital tools to create and experiment with their own artwork.

Computing

This term, Year 1 will be learning about Technology Around Us. Children will identify different types of technology and explore how technology is used at home, in school and in the wider world. They will learn to recognise devices such as tablets, laptops and desktop computers and understand their different uses. We will also be exploring digital painting, using shape, freehand, line and choosing appropriate tools to draw a picture using a computer.

PSHE (Jigsaw)

We will be learning about Being Me in My World and Celebrating Differences.

PE

We will take part in invasion games and gymnastics focusing on balance, coordination, confidence and team work.

RE

We will explore the question Who are Christians and what do they believe?

Music

This term in Music, the children will explore a variety of musicians, musical styles and rhythms through two exciting units of work. In ‘Hey You!’, they will learn about Old School Hip Hop, while ‘Rhythm in the Way We Walk’ introduces children to the sounds and rhythms of Reggae and Hip Hop. Through singing, listening, performing and composing, pupils will develop their musical skills and appreciation of different genres.

Everyone in the Reception Team are incredibly excited to see you all again and to start a wonderful year off together.

The Reception team would like to welcome you to our year group page.

Here you will find information about what your child has been learning in Reception and how you can help them at home. This page will be updated with information about current and future topics.

 

What does your child need for Reception?

  • A school uniform and shoes
  • A water bottle

  • A pair of wellies
  • A set of spare clothes in a soft bag to hang on their peg.
  • A smile!

Please label all of your child’s belongings with their name.

 

What learning will your child be exploring this half term?

This half term the focus is developing the children’s social and emotional development.

This involves helping children to develop a sense of seeing themselves as a valuable individual, build constructive and respectful relationships, express their feelings and consider the feelings of others, regulate behaviour accordingly, work and play cooperatively and take turns with others, give focused attention to what the teacher says.

Maths

In Maths, in addition to following their own interests the children will be exploring numbers to 5, comparing groups within 5, exploring 2D and 3D shapes, change within 5, number bonds within 5 and space.

Phonics

In Phonics, the children will be learning the Phase 1 and Phase 2 Phonics sounds and the phase two key words. These will be sent as homework for the children to practise at home.

We use the Super Sounds and Story Time Phonics scheme to teach phonics. It supports the Phonics Planning of Letters and Sounds by learning the actions to the song for each new letter sound and the actions.

Learning at Home

Each week, your child will bring home a homework book and a library book to share with you.

Library books will be changed every Friday. On this day, your child will also bring home their homework book containing a homework activity linked to their learning from that week. Together, you and your child can choose an activity from the homework menu below.

Homework can be completed directly in the homework book or presented in any way your child chooses. For example, photographs or videos of completed activities can be emailed to us at reception@corrie.tameside.sch.uk

Homework should be returned by the following Wednesday each week.
