We are looking forward to this busy and exciting year ahead and hope to make the children’s final year in primary school a successful and memorable one!
Just a few notes to make everyone aware of when things will be happening:
Forest School will be every Monday afternoon, so children will need to bring their Forest School clothes in on this day. Clothes should be warm and waterproof and include wellies (ideally) or old trainers.
PE will be every Friday morning, so the children need their kits in school on this day. Just a reminder that school P.E. kit comprises of a white t-shirt, black shorts and trainers or pumps and if P.E. is taking place outside and the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear dark jogging bottoms and trainers. All jewellery must be removed for P.E. If the children cannot remove the jewellery themselves, it is best if they do not wear it on the PE days.
English
This term Year Six are exploring the powerful picture book ‘Rose Blanche’ by Roberto Innocenti. Set during the Second World War, the story follows a young German girl whose courage and compassion lead her to help children imprisoned in a concentration camp. Through the study of the text, pupils will make inferences, analyse character’s motivations and consider different perspectives. This will lead to children writing a range of descriptive writing, diary entries, letters and discussion.
Maths
In our maths lessons we will be covering the Year Six objectives from the maths curriculum using the Power Maths scheme. We will start by focusing on place value of numbers up to 10,000,000. We will then cover the four operations before tackling long division!
Topic
The first topic we are covering this year is North America. We will be looking at lots of geographical skills during this topic and will be finding out lots about all the different countries and diverse cultures within this fascinating continent. Part of the weekly homework in Year Six will again be to complete some topic based activities and the homework menu will again be used to choose activities from.
Science
Our Bodies: In this unit children will learn how to identify and explain the different systems which are constantly at work within the human body. We will look in detail at some of these systems including the circulatory system and we will look at how the heart works to circulate our blood around the body.
Changing Circuits: In this unit, the children will learn how to create and develop increasingly difficult and complex circuits, building on the work they completed in Year Three.
PSHE
We will look at the Jigsaw puzzle piece ‘Being Me in My World’ and thinking about our own targets for the year ahead. We will also be looking at being a global citizen and comparing our lives with a child from Ghana. In our second Jigsaw puzzle piece ‘Celebrating Difference’ we will be looking at accepting that everyone is different and the importance of including others when working and playing. We will also be looking at what a bully is and how to help someone who is being bullied.
RE
We will be investigating the key question: What do religions say to us when life gets hard? We will be discussing and asking questions about what happens when we die, where our soul goes, reincarnation and the concept of heaven.
Music
We will be looking at the song ‘Happy’ by Pharell Williams and will learn to sing and play it using instruments.
PE
During autumn one we are going to be taking part in gymnastics in our PE sessions. The children will be exploring balancing, rolling and travelling. They will then be working in unison to develop their own sequences of moves. Ultimately, the children will perform their sequences to the rest of the class and appraise each other’s performances.
During autumn two we will be taking part in basketball in our PE sessions. The children will learn to dribble, pass and shoot the ball. We will explore the different rules of basketball and the skills involved. The children will build upon their skills and work up to playing matches.
Computing
This term the children will be exploring two units: Computer systems and network communication and creating media through 3D modelling. In the first half of the term, we will explore how devices communicate with each other using the internet. We will then work collaboratively on a single document to create a presentation using the google suite software.
In the second half of the term, we will be using a programme called Tinkercad to create online 3D models. We will begin by creating simple things such as a name label. We will then build up to creating a pencil pot holder and finally a building.
The Arts
This term we are going to be exploring poetry. We will be focusing on the theme of ‘identity’. We are going to discover poetry and read poems from a range of different authors. Then we will explore how we can create our own poems by thinking about what components make up our identity and transform this into vocabulary. Finally, we will create our own poems and combine this with water paint to develop a finished piece.
Homework
The children will continue to receive maths homework every week and they will also be given a topic sheet which they can select homework from. We will always set the homework on a Friday and it must be brought back into school by the following Wednesday. It is vitally important that they read every day. We are really working on the children’s comprehension skills so it would be great if you could ask them questions about their books every time you read with them.
